"System Load Indicator" add net total - 'grammar'

Where can I find documentation of the required grammar to add a Net: total style entry into the applet to show the network totals for downloads and uploads.

The same data that is displayed by the nload or vnstat cli program in the total fields.

Documentation is sadly mostly missing :-(

For your case, you can use basic math in the $(...) expressions, so sth like
   $(speed(net.down+net.up))
should work.
