installing printer drivers problem

Asked by David M

Hello

I am having a problem with the linux distribution Ubantu 9.10 and installing my HP p1005 printer. After running hp-setup, I receive an error message when the installer asks for an additional binary file. The error message is "network cannot be found". The computer is connected to the internet and can download software. So the binary file does not get downloaded and the install errs out.

The log is below.

dmautone@dellB110:~/Downloads/hplip-3.9.10$ sudo hp-check -t

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.10)
Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.3

Copyright (c) 2001-9 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
This is free software, and you are welcome to distribute it
under certain conditions. See COPYING file for more details.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to
determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already
built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both
compile- and run-time dependencies).

Are you using the version of hplip installed with Ubuntu or through its package manager, or did you download a version from here? If from here, uninstall it (sorry - don't remember how - check the source) and install it as follows:

sudo aptitude install hplip

If you are using the Ubuntu version, reinstall it:

sudo aptitude reinstall hplip

I had a similar problem with LaserJet P1005 printer after upgrading to 9.10. Running "hp-setup -i" as root and accepting firmware installation solved the problem.

Can you help with this problem?
