I/O Error scanning with M1120n over network using HPLIP 3.9.4b

Asked by Sander Marechal

I have a HP LaserJet M1120n that is attached to my network using ethernet. I can print with it just fine but scanning fails with "I/O error" or "Device busy" errors.

I am running Debian Lenny and I have installed hplip and all dependencies from Debian unstable (that's HPLIP version 3.9.4b). I have also used hp-setup to install the latest binary blobs.

According to Question #48156 HPLIP 2.8.10 added support for this printer but you forgot to implement scanning support over the network. Indeed, scanning works when I use my USB cable. HPLIP is now at version 3.9.4b so I assume scanning over the network should work now as well.

According to Question #72163 it should work. That question suggest a hardware problem and see if snmpwalk works correctly. It does:

# snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 1 192.168.1.7 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.9.1.1.7.0
enterprises.11.2.3.9.1.1.7.0 = STRING: "MFG:Hewlett-Packard;MDL:HP LaserJet M1120n MFP;CMD:ZJS,HBS,PJL,ACL;CLS:PRINTER;DES:HP LaserJet M1120n MFP;FWVER:20080228;"

Scanimage -L says:

# scanimage -L
device `hpaio:/net/HP_LaserJet_M1120n_MFP?ip=192.168.1.7' is a Hewlett-Packard HP_LaserJet_M1120n_MFP all-in-one

Scanimage > image.pnm says:

# scanimage > image.pnm
scanimage: open of device hpaio:/net/HP_LaserJet_M1120n_MFP?ip=192.168.1.7 failed: Error during device I/O

XSane says:
Failed to open device `hpaio:/net/HP_LaserJet_M1120n_MFP?ip=192.168.1.7': Error during device I/O.

Can anyone please help get get scanning to work over the network?

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper
dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Everything looks okay. Can you run hp-check -t as user and post the output?

Also try running:

su -c "tail -f /var/log/syslog"

then try scanning and post the output in the syslog.

Thanks!

Aaron

That is also what I posted at the top of my previous reply. Here it is again. This time I scanned with XSane instead of the scanimage commanline tool. The output is the same:

Sep 25 23:45:54 tweety xsane: scan/sane/marvell.c 66: unable to load restricted library: libhpmud.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I googled for libhpmud.so and came across bug #380322 in Ubuntu:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hplip/+bug/380322

I ran this:

/usr/lib# ln -s libhpmud.so.0.0.4 libhpmud.so

and after that scanning worked. I have filed a bug with Debian about this. I will update this question with the link to the bug report when I get the confirmation e-mail from the Debian Bug Tracking System.
