hplip3.9.6b does not work on my computer using ubuntu 9.04

I have just installed ubuntu 9.04,it detected and installed the driver so I tried printing to hp 7450, it worked for three small text files printed from Open Office and then when I tried to print a jpeg image, about 200kb, it stopped working, giving a variety of errors , printer not connected, paper out, print queue stopped. at this stage I uninstalled hplip and installed the latest version 3.9.6b, but this does not seem to have had any beneficial effect, it now says that it has completed the print job, but nothing prints.It is even saying that it has printed jobs multiple times even after they have been cancelled I have tried turning the system off and then on again. What do you suggest?

Hope this gives some clues. I have installed Ubuntu using the same cd iso on another machine, a borrowed laptop, and it seems to be working. The only thing that I have not done on the laptop is to copy the home directory over.

Thanks for your help, I am wondering if this problem may be hardware related?

selecting diagnose from this error dialogue box gives

There are status messages associated with this queue

The printers state message is:'/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed'.

Hi Aaron,
         I have just googled" /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed", a few people seem to be having a similar problem. I then went into cups and "Modify printer" and followed the instructions, not changing anything, just clicked straight through, I did check that the printer was started and that it was set as the default. Why this should have made a difference I don't know, but the printer now works, for the time being anyway also clicking on the HP icon brings up a more substantial toolbox.I have printed out a fairly substantial web page and a test page from cups, they both printed immediatly.
 I would welcome any comments bearing in mind that in the beginning I was able to print for a short time.
 Are there any log files that may shed any light, I am unsure that the problem has been cured because I don't know what the problem was.

I found that altering some of the bios settings in the computer caused a printing problem, no other apparent problems, resetting to failsafe, printing worked,
