HPLIP

Device communications error (5012)

Hi!

I have an HP Deskjet 4122e printer connected, via USB cable, to a Linux Mint (latest version, latest updates) box.

Whenever I try to start HPLIP to manage the printer, I get two error messages:

1 - HPLIP device status - Deskjet_4100_series_Printer (CN1C1DG0D7) - Device communication error (5012)
2 - HPLIP device status - Deskjet_4100 - Printer queue stopped (700)

so there is no way to manage the printer.

Curiosly, I can print documents without problems or scan documents using the said Linux box via the USB connection I have talked about.

What can I do? What information do you need to help me?

This is not strange at all. Your printing system is operating exactly as
designed. With a USB connection the HPLIP setup is non-operative. In
fact you have no need of HPLIP. See the IPP-over-USB sections at

I'll deinstall HPLIP, then.

Is there any other (GUI-based) utility that will let me do things like cleaning the cartridges or checking their ink level? These are the functions I used most, so having no HPLIP may be a (little) inconvenience... Excuse me if this one is an obvious question; maybe the documentation you recommend talks about something I could use, but, despite not being a noob, such docs are too complicated for me...

Please see the printer manual.

Access the embedded web server (EWS) with a browser:

 http://localhost:60000

and see whether ink levels are displayed there. Levels are definitely
accessed also from the printer control panel. I am not sure about cleaning
from the printer control panel or EWS.
