Print jobs never get to printer
I just bought a printer for my computer which runs Ubuntu 22.04.
I'm trying to install the printer.
The printer model is: HP Smart Tank 5100 Series.
The computer hardware info is at the end of this description.
My printer was not supported by the version of HPLIP which came "out of the box" with Ubuntu 22.04, so I installed HPLIP 3.23.5.
At least I've tried to install it, but it doesn't work yet.
The only thing the printer has successfully printed is an "Printer Information Report" (by pushing the button labeled "I" on the printer).
I tried to print in two different ways:
[1] From a LibreOffice file (*.odt), using the menu options: File --> Print
[2] From “hp_toolbox” --> actions --> print test page
In both cases: A popup window says "Printing Stopped ..."
If I bring up the Ubuntu "Settings" application, it lists all my print jobs with the word "Stopped" printed by each job.
If I bring up "hp-toolbox", under the "status" tab, it tells me that all my print jobs are "started" and "completed".
I notice that the "competed" times are the same as the "start" times. (But my *.odt file is only 2 lines long).
I ran hp-check and hp-doctor, and here’s what happened:

I ran the command:

Two things to note:

[Note 2] If I do not redirect the command, i.e., if I just run the command:

The I get (near the beginning of the output) some text in red:

error: Failed to connect to HPLIP site. Error code = 8
error: Failed to get latest version of HPLIP.
error: Failed to upgrade latest HPLIP. Is hp-upgrade already running (i.e. foreground or background)?
Because this error text is not captured by my redirection and the fact that it occurs at a different place in the output each time I run it, I assume that the text is being printed out by another asynchronous process.

You probably want to know something about my computer hardware.

Printing and scanning should be possible on Ubuntu 22.04 without HPLIP.
Give the outputs of

The last 3 commands returned nothing to the command prompt.
I should mention something else.
I have Anaconda (python + numpy + scipy + etc.) installed.
In my first attempt to install HPLIB I used the automatic installer.
I used the "automatic" mode.
I couldn't get it to work.
I think the problem was the confusion between my two versions of python
/usr/bin/python
/home/scott/
I ended up doing several "conda installs", e.g. (from my "history"):
633 conda install -c conda-forge dbus-python
634 conda install -c conda-forge qt
635 conda install -c anaconda reportlab
636 conda install -c conda-forge notify2
637 conda install -c anaconda pyqt
638 conda install -c conda-forge dbus-python
639 conda install -c anaconda pyqt
640 conda install -c conda-forge dbus
641 conda install -c conda-forge python-devtools
The "conda installs" will update just my anaconda version of python (I
assume).
As you can see, I installed some things more than once as the installer
complained about it.
I got tired of playing "whack-a-mole" and came to the conclusion that there
was some confusion about which version of python was being used.
I do have some concern about what state my machine is in after all this
mucking about.
I can still bring up spyder and use my anaconda python, so I apparently did
not break anaconda.
For my second attempt, I commented out the lines of my .bashrc which
get me anaconda python. I.e., I commented out stuff like:
export PATH="/
Then I installed HPLIB using the manual installer.
It was easier to follow the individual steps and see where the problems
were.
I followed the instructions at
https:/
The install seemed to go OK other than dealing with dependencies.
E.g., it was complaining about "libcanberra-gtk3" and a google search had
me do the following:
sudo apt install libcanberra-
This "second attempt" is where I am now.

The 7/1/4 indicates a device capable of IPP-over-USB. The printer should
have been auto-setup for you (without using HPLIP). See

The ipp-usb service is active. It knows the device is capable of IPP-over-USB.
> The last 3 commands returned nothing to the command prompt.
You have a problem with mDNS/DNS-SD. The printer should be advertising
itself and Ubuntu should detect it. That is why you did not get auto-setup.
Is port 5353 blocked?

The printer advertising (look for mdns, Bonjour, AirPrint) can be
checked from the printer's web server:
Also check
systemctl status avahi-daemon

From the "manuals" tab, I downloaded 3 manuals:
and searched them for each of the 3 keywords "mdns", "bojour", "airprint".
I could find nothing.
The 3 manuals are (typing by hand, so excuse typos):

Setup and Reference Guide 11.54 MB
User Guide 4.07 MB
what else can you suggest?

I am a novice at system admin. I do not know how to "open" or "close" ports. If that's all I need and if there is a simple command to do so, please tell me. My searching on the internet and trying things out is just getting me confused. I have tried to turn on the port, but it seems that I have not been successful. I have simple questions like: Is 53:53 equivalent to 5353 when looking at the output of some of these commands. Is there a simple overview of the relevant info that I could read?

ipp-usb knows the printer is there because the service is active. An active
service should mean the printer's web interface is accessible. I'm lost and
imagine
also fails.
What do you get for (as root)
ipp-usb check ?

ipp-usb check gives me:

Num Device Vndr:Prod Model

I have two general comments:
[1] I did some research on "driverless" etc. and now agree with your previous statement to the effect that I should not need HPLIP with Ubuntu 22.04 and my particular printer. If that is the case, then why should I care if HPLIP is failing.
[2] Recall earlier in discussion, the ambiguity between the 2 pythons I have installed. I think this hindered my installation of HPLIP.
In fact, perhaps HPLIB cannot find the shared object file because of my botched installation.
I do not know that my installation is botched, but I do have some trepidation.
I am quite happy going with the driverless route. I did not know that was an option until you mentioned it.
But, if (I say IF) I still want to go with HPLIP, is there a way of doing the equivalent of a "make clean", and re-installing it?
Thank you for your patience

I did a:
sudo apt install --reinstall libgs9 libgs9-common
then rebooted.
It still does not work.
hp-testpage still sends nothing to the printer.
BTW, when I run hp-testpage, there are two radio buttons:
* HPLIP test page (tests print driver)
* Printer diagnostic page (does not test print driver)
The second option (".... (does not test print driver)") is grayed out, so I cannot click that option.
Should I be concerned?
FWIW, here's what happens when I run hp-testpage in debug mode:

I tried restarting cups:
sudo service cups restart
I tried re-installing hplip:
sudo apt remove hplip hplip-data
udo apt install hplip hplip-gui (anwer “yes” to question)
This seemed to leave me worse off than before, so I (re-)installed HPLIP using the tar.gz file following instructions at
https:/
hp-check gives me all "OKs", No errors or warnings.
But hp-testpage does not send anything to the printer.
Any comments?

Maybe this is still caused by the ghostscript crash (see comments #10 and #14)
Is there anything shown in the system logs about a crash of a related process?

I disabled "apparmor" and re-tried printing to the test file as per
https:/
I used journalctl to look at system logs and saw no error message about ghostscript.
I did see the error message:
After a dialog with chatgpt I did the following:
tracker3 daemon --kill
rm -r ~/.cache/tracker3/
rm -r ~/.local/
tracker3 daemon --start
I re-tried printing, looking at the error logs, the SQLite error was gone, and now I found the error message:
After a dialog with chatgpt, I did the following:
sudo usermod -aG scanner colord
<reboot>
sudo systemctl restart colord.service
I re-tried printing (notice the time stamp)

My error log file has only two lines which contain the text "error":
Jun 22 16:34:31 all-in-one fprintd[6994]: libusb: error [udev_hotplug_
Jun 22 16:40:51 all-in-one fprintd[8263]: libusb: error [udev_hotplug_
I have two comments about the "fprintd" error message:
[1] fprintd is apparently a "Fingerprint Authentication Daemon". Why do I need one of these? I have no hardware to support such a thing.
[2] The times of the "fprintd" errors are both BEFORE and AFTER the file of printing, which to me implies that the daemon is just doing its thing independently of my print request.
So why does my printing still not work?
To get this last error log, I executed the command:
journalctl --since "10 minutes ago" > journal8.txt
What follows is the contents of the file journal8.txt (recall the time stamp of the print: Thu Jun 22 04:35:23 PM PDT 2023):

I forgot to mention: One other change I made was to disable network sharing of the printer (it is connected directly by USB).
I did this using the Settings Application:
Settings --> Printers --> Additional Printer Settings
In the popup window:
Right click on "Smart_Tank_5100" which gives a list with some items checked.
I make sure that "Enabled" is the only item checked.
Which means that "Shared" is not checked

BTW, as per
https:/
the file /tmp/printout is still of size zero.

I checked out ghostscript (see comment 18).
Using 'gs', I can successfully read a pdf file and a postcript file.

I ran 'hp-check' and the only problem I see is the message:
warning: Printer is not HPLIP installed. Printers must use the hp: or hpfax: CUPS backend for HP-Devices.
I tried submitting jobs to each of the 2 queues that I have:
Queue # 1 is the one I really want, it's called "Smart_Tank_5100"
Queue #2 is called "test". This just prints to a file as per the website I used before (see comment 19), I.e., the following link:
https:/
Then I pointed my browser to:
http://
and looked under the "jobs" tab.
There is a table with 3 rows and 7 columns.
Column 7 is just some "control" menu items, so I will omit that and type in a table with 3 rows and 6 columns.
I will use a colon (:) to delimit the columns of the table (just in case the variable width font messes things up):
ID : Name : User : Size : Pages : State
test-56 : Unknown : Withheld : 1k : Unknown : stopped "Filter failed"
Smart_Tank_5100-57 : Unknown : Withheld : 1k : Unknown : stopped "Filter failed"
Clearly the "filter failed" message is not what I want to see.
I'm thinking that I should follow the instructions at:
https:/
I will quote from this web page:
Do not send arbitrary files unfiltered to the printer now hoping that will solve any problems. Please use this mainly if you are asked for doing so in bug reports or after asking a support question.
So because the above advice gives me some trepidation, I await your advice on how to do this "Sending_

FWIW, If I run the command
find /dev -name 'lp*'
I find nothing.
I'm telling you this, because I see that "method 2" at
https:/
assumes that one or more of these files exist.
ChatGPT tells me not to worry if I am using a USB-connected printer.
My understanding is that "method 3" makes no sense for me (my printer is not connected via a network).
This leaves only "method 1".
But for now, I will wait for your advice.

I guess, the key still is
stopped "Filter failed"
Unfortunately I do not have any idea how to find the root cause.

I am not giving up yet.
As per "method 1" of:
https:/
I tried the command:
lp -d Smart_Tank_5100 -oraw junk.txt
The printer responded by lighting up a Red "X" (which is the "cancel" button).
This button stayed lit for over a minute and then went dark.
This is the most response I've seen from my printer..
For completeness, and in desperation, I am going to type in by hand (some of) what my printer spits out when I push the "I" button
(I assume I can ignore all the stuff about wireless, because I am using USB):

I have a print queue named "test" created using the command:
lpadmin -p test -E -v file:/tmp/printout -P /etc/cups/
(as per https:/
I then did:
cancel -a
And then submitted a tiny file (an ASCII file with one line of text) as follows:

Could I have a screwed up installation of hplip???????????
Here's why I'm worried (after seeing the error messages above).
The website:
https:/
Has the following statement:
WARNING! These examples may create conflict if you install the latest hplip from the official HP site on Ubuntu and the APT version provided by Debian/Ubuntu Linux project. In other words, only use the APT method or the latest method (.run file). Do not use both methods to install hplip.
I'm wondering if something like this happened to me.
Since I'm a novice at this sys admin stuff, it's possible that my earlier efforts used APT (perhaps indirectly through a script or something).
My later efforts involved installing manually using a *.tar.gz file from:
https:/
I got to the sourceforge website through a link from:
https:/
Is there a good way to "clean up" hplip and start over again?

Are you member of the lp and lpadmin groups?
2.
D [25/Jun/
and your last comment:
Did you install HPLIP form the Ubuntu apt repositories or from the hp/sourceforge pages?
You might consider uninstall everything that is related to HPLIP (both the HP and the Ubuntu version if installed) and then install just one of them

1.
Yes I am in the lp and lpadmin groups:
scott@all-
scott : scott adm lp cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin lxd sambashare
2.
This is embarassing.
If I do a "history | grep apt" I see that I did my initial install attempt using apt.
That did not work.
I then did two two install attempts using the hp/sourceforge (that's where I am now)
chatgpt tells me that to un-install HPLIP from the Ubuntu apt repositories I should do:
sudo apt remove hplip
sudo apt purge hplip
sudo apt autoremove
chatgpt tells me that to un-install HPLIP from hp/sourceforge I should do:
cd /usr/share/hplip
sudo ./uninstall.py # apparently this will ask me a few questions
sudo rm -rf /usr/share/hplip
Also, earlier in this dialog (comment #1), brian_p says:
"Printing and scanning should be possible on Ubuntu 22.04 without HPLIP."
My google search seems to confirm this statement.
So, after uninstallation, should I just be able to use the printer?
I don't think so, I tried that initially, that's why I installed HPLIP.
And if I do go with re-installation of HPLIP, which installation should I use?
It seems simpler to just use the Ubuntu apt repositories.
But, hmmm, my initial install attempt with that didn't work.
Could you give your opinion on all of the above? (E.g., can I trust Chatgpt with its specific advice above)
I don't have time to do all of this today, so perhaps I will wait for your opinion before proceeding to uninstall/

FWUW, the 3 following 3 commands return nothing to the command line (see comments #1 and #2):
avahi-browse -rt _ipp._tcp
avahi-browse -rt _uscan._tcp
driverless
As I understand it:
[1] None of the above is part of the HPLIP distro.
[2] This is a problem because I should get some kind of response when I run these commands
therefore, re-installing HPLIP is NOT going to help with "avahi-browse" and "driverless".

In your very first message you said:
> My printer was not supported by the version of HPLIP which came
> "out of the box" with Ubuntu 22.04, so I installed HPLIP 3.23.5.
This was entirely the right course of action but (speaking for myself)
I am extremely reluctant to help with issues that do not involve using
a version of HPLIP that is provided by Debian/Ubuntu. In addition, you
have a modern device that should not need HPLIP to function, which
is why I took an alternative approach not involving HPLIP.
Unfortunately, for reasons I do not understand, the avahi-browse and
driverless commands produce zero outputs with a USB connection. As
far as I am concerned, this is a show-stopper.
> therefore, re-installing HPLIP is NOT going to help with "avahi-browse"
> and "driverless".
Correct. The the method are different.
However, if you decide to persist with HPLIP, on USB, I would urge you
to study the ipp-usb sections at
https:/
This is because ipp-usb impacts on the use HPLIP on a USB connection.
How about ditching USB in favour of wireless?

Is there some way of installing a copy of "driverless" and "avahi-browse"?
Does that help in any way?
I will follow your suggestion and study the ipp-usb sections of the website above.
My wife wants to ask the following question:
"Would getting a different printer help?
Specificially, a printer which works well with Ubuntu, and designed for a USB connection, not wireless.
If 'yes', can you recommend such a printer?"

Not really.
Sorry, I do not give advice on printer purchase. Why not try wireless? At least
it might give some indication whether the issue is with the printer or with
Ubuntu.
Have a go at this:
Get a terminal and execute
avahi-publish -s test _test._tcp 1234
Now open a second terminal and execute
avahi-browse _test._tcp -r
Give the output of this command.

The output is fine. A service (_test._tcp) is published and avahi-browse
finds it. However, it does not find the printing and scanning services
that should be published by the 5100. This is in spite of ipp-usb
detecting the device and becoming active.
ipp-usb puts logs in /var/log/ipp-usb/. Maybe they help.
What do you get for
ippfind -T 5 ?
I suppose you are still staying with USB?

I presume that "blacklist=true" is NOT what I want to see.
So, I checked out the file
/usr/share/
and I see where the "blacklist=true" comes from:
[HP*]
blacklist=true
[Hewlett-Packard*]
blacklist=true
I suppose I could just edit the HPLIP.conf file.
But, if "blacklist=true" got set, it was presumably set for a reason, so editing this file is just addressing the symptom and not the real problem.
So it seems to me that it would be better to un-install HPLIP (as in my comment #31), and re-install HPLIP from Debian/Ubuntu.
I'm guessing that the new HPLIP.conf file will look better.
Do you agree?
Or do you have any different suggestions?
Thanks for your assistance so far.

A few devices claim IPP-over-USB support but are defective. That is
why there are quirk rules. However, HPLIP.conf appears to blacklist
*every* HP device. That is hardly a good rule and it is not shipped in
the ipp-usb package.
> Do you agree?
No, I do not!
Delete HPLIP.conf or move it elsewhere or comment out every line in
it. Disconnect from USB. Reconnect and run the two avahi-browse
commands and driverless. Also give
lpstat -t

OK; got it!
HPLIP.conf is installed by upstream's HPLIP 3.23.5. It essentially prevents
HP deviceds understanding the IPP-over-USB protocol from using that
protocol by blacklisting them.
I haven't any idea whether the user is informed that this is being done and
why it is necessary. It certainly isn't in the Release Notes.

Thank you for all the good information. A printer has been auto-setup
for you:
scott@
scheduler is running

The name of the printer to use is
HP_Smart_
Forget about any other printer. Forget completely about HPLIP.
You should be able to print to HP_Smart_
from any application. If not, we can easily fix it. As a quick test try
lp -d HP_Smart_

I am most certainly not married to HPLIP, I just want my printer to work.
So what do I do now to make this the printer work from any application?
Is it safe to say that the problem all along was the existence of that file HPLIP.conf?
I assume you just picked a small text file at random as a test case, but just in case you cared, here it is:

Excellent. We have liftoff.

You do not need HPLIP.
Let me repeat that: You do not need HPLIP.
Just in case I was unclear: You do not need HPLIP. :)

The printer HP_Smart_
the print dialog of an application. Select it and print. Try with Firefox.

That's the case. I also know the file is on your system.

I successfully printed from Firefox. Yay!!!
My only (small) concern is that I have multiple printer options in the menu. How do I remove the ones I don't want?
What I see in my pulldown menu of Firefox is:
Save to PDF
HP_Smart_
HP_Smart_
HP_Smart_Tank_5100
test
It is curious that two of these work, but one ends in an underscore and the other does not.
What makes sense to me is to keep the first two: "Save to PDF" and "HP_Smart_

Can you scan with

lpadmin -x test

Thanks, I deleted the unwanted printers.
I successfully scanned using
simple-scan "airscan:e0:HP Smart Tank 5100 series [8EC9AE] (USB)"
I also successfully scanned using
http://
I also made a one line file ~/.cups/lpoptions with the text:
Default HP_Smart_
So, now "lp" works.
And printing from LibreOfficeWriter works as I want.
The printing pulldown menu has two options
HP_Smart_
Print to File
But Firefox is a bit weird. There are three printing options which are:
HP_Smart_
HP_Smart_
Print to File
I want to get rid of the menu option with the underscore.
(Note that the underscore menu item will successfully print!)
I am delighted to now have a working printer and scanner.
So, if you cannot help with Firefox, I am still very grateful for your help.
But, if you are able, I would appreciate help with this Firefox problem.
BTW, to fix my Firefox problem, chatgpt suggested pointing my browser to
"about:config" and then clicking on a few things.
I could not get this to work.

Scott, thank you for engaging with this issue and asking such astute
questions. The existence of HPLIP.conf was new to me, so I am
grateful to know about it. It had me completely flummoxed. Enjoy
your new printer/scanner.

I have some clarification (question?) that perhaps you could help with.
Consider it a formality, if you do not know just say so and I will be delighted to mark the issue as solved.
First, some facts (as I understand them):
[1] When I first got the printer, I knew nothing of HPLIP, I just plugged it in expecting (hoping) it would work.
It did not work.
And yet (presumably) hplip.conf did not exist
[2] I then installed HPLIP (First using "sudu apt ...", when that didn't work, from a *.tar.gz file from hp.
This is where you got involved.
I just reviewed my initial question to you folks (I.e., before "comment #1).
I enclosed the results of doing a "hp-check" command.
Here is a quote from that "hp-check":
hp-
hp-
So, apparently this is when hplip.conf was created
[3] After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, eventually you had me move hplip.conf out of the way.
And it worked.
Can you see how I am having trouble reconciling all these facts?
In step one, I did not know that I needed to do a "lpstat -t" to find the name: HP_Smart_
Was that my problem?
No, I think not, because I do not really need this name.
It is used only to set up the default (in ~/.cups/lpoptions),
I'm thinking that applications like Firefox do not need to have a default.
Maybe my recollection of the "facts" is muddled (?). Don't be afraid to tell me so.
If you can provide some clarification for me, that would be nice.
But, if not, let me assure you again that I will happily check this as "problem solved".

Oops, just in case it wasn't clear:
In step 2 of my previous comment. When I used the tar.gz file from hp, I ran "configure" and "make" as part of my installation of hplip.
So, I assume that the "configure" command mentioned in the "hp-check" refers to my installation of hplip.
This is why I assume that hplip.conf did not exist prior to my installation.

To address at least one of your qureies:
> [1] When I first got the printer, I knew nothing of HPLIP, I just plugged it in expecting
> (hoping) it would work.
> It did not work.
The printer should have shown up in Firefox immediately, just as it does now.
That is the way the printing system is designed for a printer like yours.
Perhaps it was a matter of expectation and observation. I have met this matter
with other users. I don't argue but just get on with providing solutions.
> Can you see how I am having trouble reconciling all these facts?
I have this trouble all the time :). Sometimes it is a cups-browsed issue.
