HPLIP 3.18.5 is unable to find network printer, though CUPS sees it

Asked by jds

I am running Ubuntu 16.04. I have installed and reinstalled hplip 3.18.5. There are no complaints during the installation.
However, when I use the GUI to find my printer, it sees no available printers, though there are at least three. I have checked
my IP tables and the correct ports are all open. When I put in the printer's IP address, it is still not seen by hplip. On the
other hand, if I open up CUPS it sees the printer, but I cannot access any of the features or settings. Also, software begins
crashing on the system when I use it. Skanlite is unable to find the scanner. If I run 'hp-check -t', I do get the following two
warnings about the printer installed via CUPS:

warning: Failed to read /etc/cups/ppd/HP_Color_LaserJet_MFP_M477fdw_.ppd ppd file

and

warning: Printer is not HPLIP installed. Printers must use the hp: or hpfax: CUPS backend for HP-Devices

I have tried this a bunch of times without any success, and am about to return the printer for one that works,
since I am unable to find the source of the problem.

Can anyone help ?

In case it is useful, here is the rest of hp-check -t:

Hi Jds,

Please try the troubleshoot steps from the following link and see if it resolves the issue.
If not resolved,
Run sudo hp-logcapture command and then try adding HP printer alone in the network with hp-setup and -g option.
Then share the logs.

Thanks,
Srinivas Teja.

Hi Srinivas,

Thanks for the help---I hadn't found that troubleshooting guide.

hp-makeuri returns 'error: Device not found'

Pinging the address returns nothing as well. However, I can verify that this is the correct IP for the printer.

Oops, the IP address DID change. Now, I can reach it with hp-makeuri
I am trying to add the printer using CUPS, but there are several options here.
Using HP network printer. I set it up, but it functions just as before with CUPS.

So, I did the next step storing the logs.

Now trying to find out how to share the logs ??

OK, tried sharing logs using this. Note that the IP addresses have been obscured:

Hi jds,

I see logs says that ip is invalid (xxx.yyy.zz.255), device_uri = hp:/net/HP_Color_LaserJet_MFP_M477fdw?ip=xxx.yyy.zzz.255
and so looks like it is not able to connect to the device.
Can you print the configuration page on the printer and see the ip-address.
The try hp-makeuri <ip-address>
Also confirm if your system is in the same network.
Could you please also share me both the ip's on the printer and on your system.

Thanks,
Srinivas Teja.

Yes, this is what I did to get the IP address

>The try hp-makeuri <ip-address>

Yes, I did this above.

>Also confirm if your system is in the same network.

It is supposed to be. How would you like that confirmed?

>Could you please also share me both the ip's on the printer and on your system.

I would prefer not to make those numbers public, if possible. Is there a way to share that privately?

So, I asked another person familiar with Linux to help me out on the printer.
We went through exactly the usual steps using hplip, so I could show him where it fails.
This time it worked. I have no idea why the identical steps worked this time.
Maybe because the printer was in sleep mode before? At any rate, it is now working,
on my possibly 20th attempt.

Many thanks for your instructions and trying to get it working.
