Cant get HP 6980 printer to work on Acer One running Linux

Asked by JamesWSwain

I have bought a Acer One and am trying to get it to work with my wireless HP 6980 printer. It runs linux which I know nothing about, I have been on the following site:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/linpus.html

I have followed the instructions to install the relevant software to make the printer work but I am getting the following response just after starting to install:

I downloaded the file, ran it to install and it said says there is some problems, it then comes up with this saying it has conflicts and cannot install. Do you need me to try and install it and give you an exact breakdown of what happens?

Please confirm and I will go through this tomorrow and get you a breakdown if needed?

I dont really understand why it does not work, its frustrating that the printer wont work.

Thanks

James

James,

Sorry I'm still not clear at what step you experienced this problem. You have to follow the commands listed at Step 3 each one by one for the install to work correctly.

You have to execute each line as a separate command:

1. Press Alt-F2
2. Type "terminal" click ok
3. Enter the following commands:
4. cd ~/Desktop/
5. su -c "rpm -ev --nodeps libsane-hpaio"
6. su -c "rpm -ev hplip-gui"
7. su -c "rpm -ev hplip"
8. su -c "rpm -ev hpijs"
9. su -c "yum install PyQt"
10. su -c "yum install xsane"
11. su -c "rpm -Uvh hplipfull-3.9.2.linpus-linux-2.6-intel.rpm"

If I write in these su commands after I have put in the root password (which it asks for after) is says error: package libsane-hpaio is not installed

When in installing the file the follow happens:

1) I find the file hplipfull-3.9.2.Linpus-linux-2.6-intel.rpm in my downloads, I double click on this icon
2) An Installing packages box comes up, I click apply
3) It says recieving software information
4) Its say resolving descrepencies
5) A box then comes up and says Unable to verify hplipfull - 3.9.2.linpus-0.i386, it also says Malicious software can damage your computer or cause other harm. Are you sure you wish to install this package?
There is a details box that says Package hplipfull-3.9.2.linpus-linux-2.6-intel.rpm is not signed
6) There is a cancel box and a install anyway box, I then click the install anyway icon
7) Installing packages pops up
8) Updating Software pop up
9) Error updating software comes up again and it says There were errors encountered in trying to update the software you selected, there is again a details box that says:

10) I then press ok as this is the only box option
11) The box then closes and the printer does not work.

Any ideas how to get this to work?

Many thanks for your help. I am not sure if there is any other way to install it or a way to resolve the discrepencies?

The error "libsane-hpaio is not installed" is okay because the rpm -ev removes the package anyway.

Please don't double click the HPLIP package, you install the package using the command:

su -c "rpm -Uvh hplipfull-3.9.2.linpus-linux-2.6-intel.rpm"

Although you'll have to run the other comands:

6. su -c "rpm -ev hplip-gui"
7. su -c "rpm -ev hplip"
8. su -c "rpm -ev hpijs"
9. su -c "yum install PyQt"
10. su -c "yum install xsane"
11. su -c "rpm -Uvh hplipfull-3.9.2.linpus-linux-2.6-intel.rpm"

before running number 11. The commands 6-8 remove the current version of HPLIP which will then resolve the conflicts errors you are seeing.

I have saved the file on Desktop to make things easier, I tried what you instructed but nothing happened after I input the commands? See below the thread of what I wrote in the terminal menu?

Please can you confirm what I did wrong or is it possible for you to talk me through step by step from when I install the file to the desktop?? As it seems I am having a nightmare!

Thanks for all your time and help

What happened when you ran this command?

[user@localhost Desktop]$ su -c "rpm -Uvh hplipfull-3.9.2.linpus-2.6-intel.rpm"

This should have installed HPLIP.

What happens if you run:

su -c "hp-setup"

The problem is that the already installed HPLIP is conflicting with the updated version you want to install. If you still get an error try running

su -c "rpm -Uvh --force hplipfull-3.9.2.linpus-2.6-intel.rpm"

and you should be good to go.

I have tried the below using the file name hplipfull-3.9.2.linpus-linux-2.6-intel.rpm as I think the reason it was not finding the file is it did not have the -linux in the file name. The name of the file is hplipfull-3.9.2.linpus-linux-2.6-intel.rpm

However this still does not work and I got the result as you can see below?

Let em know if you can help, many thanks for all your time and help

James

Hi Aaron,

Do you have idea how to install these final two elements? As looking at the threead above all the other seem to be installed?

Please confirm, this question has closed now, hopefully this message will re-open it?

Kind regards

James

Can you try using the latest rpm?

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/linpus.html

We've tested this and the process and haven't run into the errors you are encountering..

I have tried exactly has it says, first saving the file to my Desktop and then putting in the commands.
See below the outcome and results I recieved, two elements seem to be installed by all the stuff we have previously done but others still are not installed and I still cant use my printer. Please confirm what I should do next, see thread below:

James,

The error:

error: open of hplipfull-3.9.4b-i386-linpuslite.rpm failed: No such file or directory

Means that when you ran the su -c "rpm -Uvh hplipfull-3.9.4b-i386-linpuslite.rpm" that the rpm install application is unable to find the file in the directory you are at.

From your last post it looks like you are in the ~/Desktop directory. If you run:

ls

do you see the filename hplipfull-3.9.4b-i386-linpuslite.rpm? If not download the file to your Desktop or cd to the directory where you downloaded the file then run the su -c "rpm -Uvh hplipfull-3.9.4b-i386-linpuslite.rpm" to install HPLIP.

If you still have a problem post the output from the su -c "rpm -Uvh hplipfull-3.9.4b-i386-linpuslite.rpm".

Hope this helps.

Aaron

Right so this has worked and the file has installed. Where do I go from here?
To add printer? Then do i add via "Windows Printer via SAMBA" or "Internet Printing Protocol (ipp) ?
I can find my printer (in the list not automatically) and put it in, I can then see it but it will not print a test page and print will not come up on my e-mails to print?
Please let me know now this file is installed where I go from here to get my printer to work, it is a HP 6980.
Many thanks, its seems like we are almost there now.
Thanks you very much for all your help.
