is there a way for localization of ppd files?

Asked by Joachim Schwender

I have been using localized ppds in the past, bit since hplip ships with on the fly creation of ppds the way of localization is broken. Another issue is that ppdc is marked deprecated, but i cannot see an alternative. So generating a po file with this toolset is still working in the current cups version, but will disappear in the future.
I know, i still could modify /etc/cups/ppd/* manually, but i think there should be a better way to do that like a localization list during the setup, where i can choose the languages that i want to include in the generated ppd. A global po file could be used to do that translation.

What is the concept of localization of ppd files?

Several, like OfficeJertPro 8100, laserjet 4000 and others from xerox kyocera too. Those other manufacturers provide for some model localized ppds, which i can use, for HP i see not a single localized ppd. I have created multilanguage ppds with de,fr,it,es languages for our purpose, but this is done manually with ppd compiler, which seems to have no future. My question is not a bout a specific device but a concept within HPLIP.

Generally we ship localized ppd's for laserjets which are not created on the fly. For other devices like officejet or deskjet, as of now localization support it not provided. We will work on it.

Can you help with this problem?
