Can't send fax using HPLIP for HP OfficejetPRO 8610

Asked by J-adam-b

Running Fedora 23, HPLIP 3.16.2-1 (installed via dnf). Previously had an HP Officejet 7310IX and had no issues faxing using HPLIP. I've upgraded my printer to an HP OfficejetPRO 8610 and fax no longer works. The printer passed the internal Fax Test (which seems to check the phone line). I can print from Fedora with no issues. Updated HPLIP to see the new printer.

Every time, when trying to send a fax, I get a communication error. The printer is set up wireless (whereas the old 7310IX was hard wired). Also, the fax had just the basic cover page added. Are there any known issues regarding the adding of a cover page or connecting via wireless (vs wired)?

Listed below is the output of 'hp-check -t'. While I see some required packages not installed, the fact that it worked with the 7310IX leads me to believe that those uninstalled packages didn't matter in regards to sending faxes. Also, I did notice the output mentioned CUPS not installed or incompatible. CUPS is installed and running (/usr/sbin/cupsd -l shows up when running ps).

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball
(.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm,
etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above
cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)

Downloaded and installed. Since I already had hplip 3.16.2 installed and I was just installing the same version, nothing changed. I installed via automatic mode figuring it would give me everything and should be ok to send faxes. Had all the missing packages installed.

It doesn't even look like the code is actually contacting the machine. While HP Device Manager does indeed show the printer and fax and can connect and give me information, the actual sending of the fax looks like it can't communicate with the machine.

After trying again, I did notice these error messages:

error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hpfax:/net/HP_Officejet_Pro_8610?zc=HPDC4A3E26AE8E
error: Unable to open device (Device not found).
error: Error, aborting.
error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hpfax:/net/HP_Officejet_Pro_8610?zc=HPDC4A3E26AE8E
error: unable to open channel

Is there anything else to look at or try to diagnose the problem? After I installed, I was able to find the printer/fax on my home network but reused the existing queues if that makes a difference.

From "hp-check" output it seems You should check if cups is installed on your system. If it is, whether cups daemon is running.

Thanks for the quick replies. CUPS is indeed installed and running. I can print from applications fine, I just can't send faxes.

> sudo dnf list cups
Installed Packages
cups.x86_64 1:2.1.3-1.fc23 @updates

> ps -ef | grep cupsd
root 1630 1 0 Feb27 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/cupsd -l

Anything else I can look at? Like I mentioned, it looks like the HP device never receives the fax request, like HP Device Manager doesn't actually communicate with the device. I have the fax audo turned to load on the 8610 and I never see the machine even attempt to start a fax. Just remains in it's idle state. Nothing even in the fax log saying an attempt was made, so I'm thinking HP Device Manager tries to connect to the devices, fails, and sees that as a failure to send the fax rather than a failure to communicate with the fax machine itself.

I found a way around my problem and in doing so, I now know exactly what the problem is (not what's causing it). Turns out, the specific problem is that hp-sendfax can't communicate with the device using URI's that make use of avahi/mDNS. I can discover the device, print to it, get status for printer and fax, but I can't send a fax.

The workaround is to "discover" the device using the IP address so that the URI has '?ip=...' instead of '?zc=...'. That works.

Don't know if this is a known problem with avahi and/or Fedora. I can't seem to find an easy way to discover using SLP (don't know if the URI's would be any different), but I can open the mDNS port in the firewall to use mDNS. Unfortunately, as I mentioned, it doesn't work too well and I had to wind up using the IP address (which is what I had used with my previous HP 7310 printer which worked).

Can you help with this problem?
