unable to delete and reinstall the driver

Asked by Arpad2

I would like to connect my new HP Envy 4500 printer to Xubuntu 14.04. I weanted to install the newset driver available on the hplip website, during the install I was reminded that older version of hplip was already installed. I tried several commands like sudo hp-uninstall, and several directoried were deleted with sudo rm -rf. Still, according to the system hplip is still in the system:

arpad@arpad-P170EM:~$ dpkg -l hplip
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name Version Architecture Description
+++-==============-============-============-=================================
rc hplip 3.14.3-0ubun amd64 HP Linux Printing and Imaging Sys
arpad@arpad-P170EM:~$

and , when I would like to delete it ,I nreceive this message:

arpad@arpad-P170EM:~$ sudo hp-uninstall
[sudo] password for arpad:
sudo: hp-uninstall: command not found
arpad@arpad-P170EM:~$

Thank you for your help!

Hi Arpad,

Please install the latest version of HPLIP 3.14.6 release. When it prompt that older version of hplip was already installed. Hit enter button and continue with the installation. It will remove the older version of HPLIP and install the latest version for you.

Let us know if the problem still persists.

Thanks and Regards,
Srikanth Lokare

Hi Srikanth,

Thank you , for your answer. I've just did what you suggested, however when asking for the version the same old version comes up, and the software doesn't detect the printer through Wi-fi. Perhaps I should try with USB cable to connect it?

Hi, here is the post, in the meantime the xubuntu recognised the printer when I entered manually the IP address, I haven't tried with a printing or scaning yet, though.

arpad@arpad-P170EM:~$ hp-check

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]
