Cannot Connect HP LaserJet 5 in Mint 11

I beg of you. Please get my HP LaserJet 5 to work in Mint 11.

I have installed the latest version of hplip.
It does not recognize my printer at all.
It is a printer with a parallel port and is attached to a computer with a USB port.

I have tried asking experts in the mint forum to no availab. Please, please, please make this work.

Thanks!

PS When I try to do hp-setup, it does not recognize the device.

Hi,

 Hope you have followed the instructions in the link http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/linuxmint.html for the installation.

The parallel port support in HPLIP has been made passive. Hence you need to modify the step #4 (Configure HPLIP for installation) in the above link.

$ ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-pp-build

Rest other steps are same.

Hope it would resolve your problem.

Bad news. It doesn't work. When I get to step 8 -- which is configuring the printer -- if I type in su, my password and hp-setup, this is the error message:

If I type in sudo hp-setup, the wizard install comes up and when I put a bullet in USB and click on next, it says the device is not found.

Now what?

PS Is there any way to downgrade to a different cups that works on my old Jaunty computer but keep Mint? How hard can that be? Keep the best of Mint 11 but go back to whatever makes Jaunty recognize the printer the very second it is plugged in.

PS/PS I just don't want to HAVE to purchase another printer. Please, not that!

Hi,

I think there is a typo in the step 8 of http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/linuxmint.html.
Please run only following command (No need of su or sudo) for setting up the device.

Thanks for the update. Can you try following things.

1) Run command "lsusb" in the terminal and this will give the output something like below.

        e.g hp-setup 001:003

Then follow on screen instructions. If this does not work then please do following things.

1)Send me the output of "lsusb -v" command
2)Send me the output of "hp-check -t" command

Hi,

It seems that the connection between PC and Printer is via router. Can you have USB cable directly connected between printer and Linux PC. and then follow comment#7.

Hi, Sanjay. No. it's a parallel to USB adapter cable. It's a Belkin F5U002. so it's a direct connection.
The parallel port is on the printer; the USB is on the computer. Thanks.

Hello Jamie,

I am sorry to inform you that HPLIP is never tested with parallel to USB adapter and from last few years (around 4-5 years) parallel port support has also been removed from the driver as well as from the device. So there is no plan of working on this in future as well. However please try Parallel port connection between printer and Linux PC without adapter and then select 4th option of window displayed after running "hp-setup" command . Hope this should work.

Also can you let me know the exact model number which you have.
Is it "HP LaserJet 5L Printer" or "HP LaserJet 5mp Printer" or something else.

Hi, Sanjay. Thank you for the response.

I have just an HP LaserJet 5. No other letter, just a straight HP LaserJet5.
The model number is C3916A.

As for trying the connection between the printer and PC without the adapter, maybe I should not have called it an "adapter." It's merely a cable. So they are already connected directly. It's a cable with a parallel connector on one side and the usb plug on the other. I have put a link below where you can view it. They call them an "adapter" as well. There's no other way to connect the printer to the computer unless I would use a serial connector because the printer has a serial port, but then I would have to get some type of adapter for the computer because it does not have a serial port for the printer.

So I hope you can think of a way to fix this. Otherwise, I have to buy a new printer and I have spent a ton of money purchasing flowers. I can't afford a new printer. There must a way for this to work. Thanks!

PS I will tell you that I found the old disks for the HP. I wonder if there is a way that I could somehow copy those drivers to this computer. Would that resolve it? I have an external floppy drive. I also have wine on this computer which I know people use to read things for Windows. I wouldn't know how to begin to make that work. I just have heard of it being done. Just a thought!

Does your Linux PC contain parallel port?
