HP printer network communication issue

Asked by Trevor Bednarz

Basically, the printer is connected via Ethernet to a router, which is then connected to the internet and to my computer, a net-book running Ubuntu 11.04. It's a HP Officejet 6500a plus, or Officejet 6500 E710n-z. Its an all in one machine withe a duplexer and document feeder. I tried previously with usb, but i found it easier with ethernet, though I don't mind going back

I have installed hplip and re-installed multiple times, following all the directions and help from different forums.

When i use hp-setup, it will find the printer, but when I attempt to add it, it gives me a network communication error.

I ran hp-check -t and it gave me two communication errors, i'll paste the output at the bottom of this post

I need this printer for college, and so far its been a pain, any help is welcome as I haven't been able to find a solution anywhere.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Hi Trevor,

Thanks for the hp-check output. Will have a setup of this printer and test this case. In the mean time can you provide us some more information.

1. Can you ping to the IP Address of the printer and paste the results here.
2. Post us the output of "hp-probe -b net" command by running it in terminal.

Thanks & Regards,
Goutam kodu

Hi Trevor

Try adding groups lp, lpadmin, sys to the user and then check.

Sorry it took so long to reply, i've been busy with school work.

I added the user to lp and lpadmin and tried running hp-setup again, selecting the ethernet/jet direct option, and it came up with this error

if there is anything else you need me to do, please tell me. I have got the printer to work via usb, but that is a hassle as it restricts the printer to be within cable length.
