Cannot fax from OfficeJet K80 and hplip-2.7.6

Asked by John Frankish

No, sorry, we are in the middle of trying to get 2.7.10 out and I'm swamped. This is still on my TODO list!

Sorry for the delay,

Let me take a look at it and I'll get back to you. Sorry for the delay. We are a bit behind in support at the moment.

Hi,

I never did get a reply to this - even if it's only to say "sorry we

can't help", at least I'll know to look elsewhere.

Thanks

Guys - I've asked three times for some help on this, I never received any requests for more information and now I'm told my request has expired because I did not supply needed information...

I guess I'll take the hint and move on.

John,

Sorry for the delay. I honestly have not had time to look into this yet. I will see if anyone else can spare some time.

Thanks for your patience,

BTW, is there any chance you could update to the newest HPILP (2.7.10)

John,

The launchpad system automatically changes the status of tickets if they sit for too long. We are actually tracking this in several ways, here in launchpad (even though it expired and now it's not expired) and a seperate tracking system. I'll try and keep bumping this so it wont expire again, if I let it slip feel free to bump it again.

Resolving this is important and we haven't forgotten about it--really I look at it everyday when I review the queue. Hopefully we'll be able to get this resolved soon, although I don't have a specific eta.

It is not that easy for me to upgrade using dsl - to use hplip in the first place, I was obliged to compile a "mydsl" extension for dsl.

Do we know that hplip-2.7.10 will solve my problem?

Note that I would have to problem to modify (hack) some of the files in hplip-2.7.6 if that could get the fax functionality working.

John,

We are going to be taking a closer look at this, and although we haven't made as much progress as we'd hoped this has been assigned to an engineer to look at that's working with Don. So although this wont be fixed in the upcoming release hopefully we'll have some more information for you sooner. Really sorry about the delay, we do want to get this working.

Thanks for your understanding.

Setting this to info request.

Hi John,

I am looking into the k80 fax problem. It appears the k80 fax printer-host protocol is different from other DeskJet and OfficeJet products we support with HPLIP. The behavior is the same on usb and JetDirect. I found and patched a bug that causes the k80 fax send state machine to hang early in the send process. The state machine no longer hangs as it did, but it will not dial. I do not yet have an eta on this, but I have been able to fax and print on my Linux box using VirtualBox with windows xp plus the hp OfficeJet k80 windows driver. I'm not proposing this as a workaround, but I can fax, and with the aid of a usb analyzer, I have identified several important differences between the windows fax solution and the Linux problem. I'll try to keep you up to date on this.

Bye for now,

Ron

Ron,

Thanks for the update - much appreciated.

As a temporary solution I can boot my dual linux/w2k laptop in windows and carry it over the the K80 to fax.

I am using a linux desktop and hplip (and cups/samba) to act as a printer, scanner (and pending a solution to this problem) fax server for a small group of windows/linux machines. The printer and and scanner part works fine, all I need is for the k80 or (better still) g85 to work with hplip...

Hi John,

Do you currently own a g85? If so, is it working for you, or does it have the "same" problem?

Yes, I do own a g85.

As per the "supported devices" list, fax is not supported at all on the g85. hp-info does not give a fax uri for the g85 and thus there is no way to fax with it...

As per the k80, print and scan work fine with the g85.

John,

We've had some intermittent luck with the K80, however we haven't been able to get the K80 to work with any stability. Because of this we've decided that the K80 and G85 Series will not be supported with fax.

We've tried what we can do to get fax to work, however because of system limitations it doesn't seem possible at this time.

We deeply apologize for this and hope that we can be of more service to you in the future.

Thanks for your continued support of HPLIP and your patience while we worked on supporting this functionality.

It's a pity that fax will not work with hplip with either the K80 or G85 when it works fine in windows on both machines.

Anyway, thanks for your support on this - I guess I'll have to take more care next time I buy an hp all-in-one...
