I can't get my Officejet 6500 Wireless E709n to connect wirelessly

I am using Linux Mint 11, which is based off of Ubuntu 11.04. I have an HP Officejet 6500 Wireless E709n, and it works perfectly with wireless on my Windows computer. I can print fine when it's plugged in, but when I'm on wireless, in the Device Manager, I refresh and it says:

Officejet_6500_E709n Printer (TH07U5222205G2)
Device communication error (5012)
And it shows a busy symbol. I am unable to print or scan. The page on the printer says everything works with Linux, and when I set it up it says you can now unplug the usb. I have retried the setup 3 times.

I went to printer control and clicked start printer, because it was set to stopped, and it said it is started/idle, with a green orb next to it. When I attempt to print it says Started a print job: (Document title) and then Print job has completed: (Document title) but it never actually prints.

When I have the device selected in the Device Manager, on the bottom of the window, it says: hp:/usb/Officejet_6500_E709n?serial=TH07U5222205G2 even though I set it up as a wireless printer.

I've tried printing pictures, documents, text files, and pdf's, and none work. After it says done printing, it says device is busy.

I added myself to the group "lp" and it still says the same thing in USER GROUPS

Hi Mark,

From the log, we could make out that there are so many required dependencies missing. Can you please try this with latest HPLIP (3.11.5) Release. You can download the same from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/gethplip.html If the problem still persists, post the output of "hp-check -t" again.

I can't run the installer for it, it says missing dependencies and it can't install them, and I couldn't find a download for one of them, so I still can't install it.

Hi Mark,

Please follow the below steps before installing the latest HPLIP 3.115 release

1. Go to System -> Administrator -> Synaptic Package Manager
2. Go to Settings Menu -> Repositories
3. Select all the "Check Box" under "Download from Internet" option.
4. Select "Main Server" at "Download From" combo box.
5. Click on Close button and close the Synaptic Package Manager.
6. Now try to Install the latest HPLIP release.

Hi Mark,

Please follow the following steps to configure the device on wireless setup.

1. Plug in the HP OfficeJet 6500 printer to PC via USB.
2. Execute "hp-setup" to setup device.
3. Select "Wireless/802.11..." then click "Next" button on "Device Discovery" screen.
4. Click "Next" button on "Wireless (Wifi/802.11) Configuration" screen.
5. The device HP OfficeJet 6500... is listed in "Select From Discovered Wireless..." screen, then click "Next".
6. Click on the appropriate Network Name from the list displayed in the "Fine and Select a Wireless Network" window and click Next button.
7. Note down the IP Adress from the "Wireless Configuration Results" window and click on the Finish button.
8. Now select "Network/Ethernet/Wireless Network (Direct Connection..)" option under "Connection IO Types"
9. Click on the "Show Advanced option" button.
10. Select "Manual Discovery" check-box.
11. Enter the IP Adress noted and click on the Next button.
12. Continue the setup complete the configuration.

After completing the configuration, please remove the USB connection. Please let us know if the problem still persists.

Hi:

I was browsing through the boards and saw this message. I have the same problem as Mark was having. I followed Srikanth's instructions in his last message and got my wireless working it appears. However, when I print the status of the job says "Held." It won't go to the printer. Printer status says the printer is "Ready." Any ideas????

I should also add that I don't get any errors from hp-setup. I have two different HP printers installed, but they should be using different queues. I am only having problems with the HP 6500 Wireless. Here's an output from hp-check -t:

Oh one last thing...I installed HPLIP 3.11.1 rather than 3.11.10 b/c 3.11.10 wasn't working on my system at the time. I read another thread where a guy got 3.11.1 to work. BTW - I am running Ubuntu 11.10.
