connecting remote through firewall
I want to connect remotely from my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS laptop, to my home machine; which is also a Ubuntu 10.04 LTS laptop.
Internally I am able to connect through the internal IP address 192.168.1.123
because I have a rule setup to accept a connection from my remote laptop's IP address: 192.168.1.456, internally.
However, when I'm on the road, this won't work. Obviously I can't predict what the IP address of the remote location will be.
I don't understand your answer re: MAC address answer:
"Assign the same IP for a MAC address in the router. My router has a live connected device and I can assign one IP for once device."
I don't know the steps to do this.
I use a Linksys WRT54G wireless for my home router.
I'm also using the "SSH/SSL VNC Viewer" application to connect to my various computers
in my home network.
If I don't use the Gufw firewall, I can connect very easily, by setting up my home external IP address in
the "SSH/SSL VNC Viewer" application. But I need the firewall on for protection.
Can you give me some *explicit* details regarding the use of an IP address for a MAC address?
I'm not familiar with those steps. I don't want to mess up or damage my home router.
Thank you very much for your kind help.
