Here's a good place to start for every new Ubuntu user: http://ubuntuguide.org/

Since your problem seems to be with Firefox you'll probably need to install some plugins for it. You can do this quickly in a command line terminal (just copy-paste this):

sudo aptitude install flashplugin-nonfree mozilla-player

Before you do this exit Firefox, or you'll need to restart it after the installation of plugins.

Can you help with this problem?
