Why isn't Gstreamer-codecs named in an easier way?

I think it whould be a whole lot easier to know what to install if the codec existed named like for instance:

gstreamer0.10-mov
gstreamer0.10-wma
gstreamer0.10-wmv
and so on.......

I'm really confused when apt doesn't always find the necessary codecs to play something.

Please make this happen as this will help users understand what Gstreamer actually does.

This is not the correct place to add suggestion, you can try your ideas in Brainstorm

// your names given wont be of any use who doesnot know about gstreamer plugins, on the other hand those who knows- knows the package name as well

If you are worried about package names try pressing TAB when after a partial name

e.g:
 sudo apt-get install build-e<presstabhere>

shall show

 sudo apt-get install build-essentail

Gstreamer provides much more than decoder plugins. It provides multiple demuxers, parsers, decoders, encoders, muxers, sinks, sources, filters, and renderers which are used with a bewildering variety of permutations. Providing each plugin in a separate package would result in hundreds of separate packages which would be required installation just for basic multimedia use, and you would still be no farther ahead in knowing which packages to install for a single individual media clip.

While there are distinct advantages to a smaller granularity for gstreamer packaging, knowing which package to install isn't really one of them. If you do not know which set of plugins you are going to need, just install the small handful of all gstreamer plugin packages. That's easier than installing hundreds of gstreamer plugin packages.
