What does the "Test this Branch" button do?

Just pure curiosity, really. That "Test this Branch" button seems to have uninstalled Ground Control, and given my project folders some nifty shovel icons. Despite GC being uninstalled, I still seem to have all of its functionality. A quick reinstallation later, and everything is preserved. A pointer to the python file name that controls this functionality would be appreciated as well.
