mint 13 xfce

Asked by Joe

Hello,

Have jumped ship from Windows XP to Linux Mint 13 XFCE 32bit on my faithful Samsung NC10.

I used to use Boxcryptor on Windows. Can you please help me with some steps on setting Gnome ENCFS on Linux Mint 13 XFCE.

I am new to Linux so would appreciate steps required to get automation of mounting encrypted folder in Dropbox.

Many thanks,
Joe

Short answer: Unfortunately I'm not familiar with boxcryptor but generally all you should have to do is importing the encrypted folder created by boxcryptor into GEncfsM and enable the checkboxes "Mount on startup" and "Save password in keyring" in the configuration dialog.

Slightly longer answer: After you have installed Dropbox and GEncfsM and Dropbox has synced its files, you start the Gnome Encfs Manager and click on "Import an existing stash". The dialog asks for the stash directory, that's where you have to put in the path to the encrypted folder inside Dropbox (Click on the folder-icon to open the file browser and select it, according to a quick ixquick search the sub-folder is called "boxcryptor.bc"). After selecting it the stash directory should read something like
"/home/username/Dropbox/boxcryptor.bc" and the Import button should be active. If this worked and the stash is imported you can double-click the entry in the manager to open the "Configure stash" dialog where you enable the options "Mount on startup" and "Save password in keyring". To mount it either click on the Checkbox in the "Mounted"-column inside the manager.

Hope this somehow helps, but as I've only heard of the name boxcryptor as part of my work on GEncfsM I'm kind of curious as well whether this works. :-)

Regards,
Moritz

Moritz, thank you for the reply.

I do think that GEncfsM can provide the solution I need. Appreciate that you have advised of the setup in the interface. As I am new to this OS could you help with letting me know the process of getting GEncfsM onto my PC. Is there a specific version I require for Linux Mint 13 XFCE 32bit?

Any commands I can copy into the terminal?

I will report results I get with trying to access the Boxcryptor folder, once I am up and running :)

Many thanks,
Joe

The fastest way to install GEncfsM on Ubuntu and its derivatives (as is Mint) is to run the following line in a terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gencfsm && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install gnome-encfs-manager

Moritz,

Thank you for the command to install GEncfsM.

I get the following message when I run the command...

GPG error: http://download.opensuse.org Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY D1F3DBBF95FAD414

What should I do at this stage?

Regards,
Joe

Have you previously tried to install GEncfsM using a different repository?

If you did, run the following in a terminal:
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/gnome-encfs-manager.list* && sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/gencfsm-ppa-precise.list*

Now try again :-)
