I assume you meant programming. That means you have some experience with Java SE, right? Just clone the git repo, open the project in NetBeans, build it, run it. Play with it a bit, discover the modules.

Then you can try to implement some small improvements, if you like. There are lots of suggestions in http://code.google.com/p/esmska/issues/list, unfortunately many of them are described in Czech. I can propose a few easy ones for you, if you like. When you have something, send me a pull request on github or attach the patch into googlecode issue tracker.

Do you use Esmska? How long, which gateways? What do you miss in the program? Do you have some open-source experience? Your interest in this project probably depends on those answers.
