Luna+1: Stick with an Ubuntu-base?

Asked by Ryan Reamsbottom

With the recent announcement of Mir, it looks like the next LTS of Ubuntu (14.04) is going to be a radical departure from what we've known. While it is likely that the other flavours of *ubuntu will still use X.org for the next LTS, I think this is a good point to discuss the future of elementaryOS, specifically Luna+1.

Do we stick with an Ubuntu base? Or do we move to say Debian? There are a lot of Debian-based distributions, we could use one as a base for elementary. In 2014, Debian "jessie" (wheezy+1) will likely be "frozen", but it might not reach a final release until 2015. There is also the issue of out of the box hardware support, which Ubuntu definitely has the upper hand.

In any case, I'm just thinking out loud here. While our main focus should be on Luna, this is a conversation we'll have to have some time. The good news is: We've got time!

We've had this conversation many times on #elementary-dev. Ubuntu is possibly the best base we can use. Also, the fact that Ubuntu's Unity is now using Mir doesn't affect us that much, really. X is still on the repositories, and we plan to keep using X for now.

Can you help with this problem?
