Try GmailWatcher. That's my choice after trying many apps out there. It integrates nice with messaging indicator, have multiple accounts and GoogleApps support and works well overall. Previous versions had option to open a default email client by clicking on the message preview, but it was dropped for some reason.

GmailWatcher doesn't mark mails as read automatically
