Well, while something like that should be possible (since other docks have them), I have no clue of how to do it. If/when I find out I'll add something.

Maybe some thing like change between big icon and small or flash color.

You could make it possible to theme it. Make one icon for the default and one with the indicator. If not both are present, only the default is used.

Definitely make it themeable.

This is one thing that I find lacking in docky.

would be great to see dockbarx honour a wide range of themeable aspects.

It's already implemented and out. It's in dockbarx x.0.24.1. The ppa hasn't been updated though, the maintainer seems to have disappeared for now. You'll have to install it manually or wait.
