Giving up after 1 attempts. Error: Error opening file

Asked by Leon Arundell

On my normal 1 TB USB backup drive, I continually get errors such as:
"Giving up after 1 attempts. Error: Error opening file “/media/leon/Leon's backup/Backup/duplicity-full.20210723T011334Z.vol951.difftar.gz”: No such file or directory."

After failing to back up on my normal drive, I successfully backed up to a different USB drive.
Then I reformatted the 1 TB drive, checked its filesystem and set permissions to allow both the owner (me) and the Group to create and delete files.
I am using Deja Dup version 40.7 under Ubuntu 20.04.2.

Can anyone offer a way around this error?

That's an odd error indeed, sorry that Deja Dup is giving you trouble. What's the output of running the following command in a Terminal?

ls /media/leon/Leon's backup/Backup/duplicity-full.20210723T011334Z.vol951.*

Thank you Michael.
The error was with my USB drive - not with Deja Dup!
The next day I was unable to read anything from the 1 TB Drive.
I bought a new backup drive. I expect that will solve the problem.

Further update: The problem was caused by a faulty USB cable.
Deja Dup's error message was correct.
The USB drive now works fine, after I replaced its USB cable.
MORAL: If a USB drive appears to fail, try it with a different USB cable before you trash it.
