can search, can't download

Asked by ewoddggg

This started a few days ago, for apparently no reason, and did not happen before.

Everytime I click on DC++ to open it, DC++, the "Settings", and the "Help" windows pop up. I close the "Help" window. All the information that was previously in "Settings" is now gone. So I fill it in again, like I did the first time I used DC++ (it worked fine until a few days ago). Then I connect to my hub. Then I search for a file - for example: a song or video.

Then here comes the problem: I double-click on the file to download and it freezes. The line with the bar at the mid-bottom of the window that shows the downloading progress is empty and jumps uncontrollably. I cannot double-click on another file to download or anything else because it is frozen. I cannot even exit the program, forcing me to shut it down by Ctrl + Alt + Delete.

If I try to open DC++ again, it happens all over again. "Settings" and "Help" windows pop-up, etc.

I have tried uninstalling - it did not remove all of it - I could still find a "DC++" folder in "All Programs" in the Start Menu. Then I would install it again, open DC++ and the same thing described above would happen again.

Please help. Thanks for your time.

The line with the progress bar will show time remaining: 0:00, speed: 0/0. The bar will say "download starting" or even "download finished", but nothing actually happens. It just keeps jumping uncrontrollably.
The file does not appear in my downloads folder.

Also, for some odd reason when I downloaded DC++ (for the first time and subsequent times), and didn't specify a folder for downloads, it didn't create one for Downloads or Imcomplete downloads in my DC++ folder. I manually created one for downloads in my computer, and set it as that. I hasn't really been a problem. My downloaded files would just appear in the folder I linked to. I have no idea where the Imcomplete ones ended up.

But now I can't download anything anyways.

Maybe try to setup DC in a folder like C:/DC instead of "program files" , your problem sounds like you miss some rights to modify the settings xml.

Make sure that you have all user rights in the folder where you install the program and also on the download and temp folder :)

Try updating to 0.704 , as 0.699 is no longer developed and bugs for it can;t help neither of us.
Are you running DC++ with the same user that you installed it? Do you have all the rights to run it ?
The download and temporary folders of DC++ can be found in Settings -> Downloads

Okay so I uninstalled 0.699 and downloaded 0.704.

I searched for a file and then clicked on it to download and on the line under "Status" (the bar) it says "Could not open target file: The system cannot find the path specified."
I tried various searches and downloads and this is what's happening now. It happens everytime.
Well, at least it doesn't freeze...

I just tried another file and it jumps between "Download starting..." and "Download finished, idle", back and forth. The file is not in the folder either.

Sorry for all the trouble. Please help.

Check the download folder setting, see if that folder really exists, and if you have the rights to read/write into it

Maybe this is a vista issue, somebody using vista should think about this question... ( on my xp machine i have no such problems )

Okay so now I know Settings >> Downloads. How do I know if I have the rights?

And everytime I click on DC++ to start it, it erases all the previous information I entered... like nickname and whatnot.

EDIT: I clicked the wrong button, this problem is not solved...

Did you install it outside that "Program files" structure like in C:\DC++ ? , if not try it that avoids alot of that securety mess that they made from Vista.

Probebly when you do all problems are gone if not right click the folder where you installed it, go to Properties, then Go to the Securety Tab, make sure your username is there and with "Full access rights" , if prompted aply it also on the subfolders that should normally work ...

Cross your finghers lol :)

Does 0.699 have dcppboot.xml? Edit the path in there to somewhere in your /Users/<name> directory.

If multiple people use the machine, you can even use the parameters there so everyone has their own settings.

Installing the new version in my C drive and then logging in as an administrator and changing some firewall setting solved the problem!

Thank you EVERYONE for your help!

You have no idea how good it feels to download from DC++ after not being able to for a few weeks! haha
