what is /proc/kcore file for?

Hello
 I need to know the usage of the file /proc/kcore
 is on my system and using 2GB

root@amd64:/# du -h /proc/kcore
2.0G /proc/kcore
root@amd64:/# file /proc/kcore
/proc/kcore: regular file, no read permission
root@amd64:/# ls -al /proc/kcore
-r-------- 1 root root 2147422208 2007-04-21 13:16 /proc/kcore
root@amd64:/# less /proc/kcore
/proc/kcore: Operation not permitted
root@amd64:/# fuser /proc/kcore
root@amd64:/# ls /proc

I am using Ubuntu Edgy on a AMD64 arch
