how to set an install prefix

I want compiz to install in /usr and not in /usr/local, how can I set the prefix?
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr doesnt work.

I dont know why but
cmake ../ -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr
works now.
