byobu

update-notifier-common dependency - what for?

byobu includes update-notifier-common dependency, which in turn includes gconf2, which requires 8 other dependencies that eventually seems to bring the whole GNOME subsystem. What is the reason for console byobu to have this update-notifier-common dependency? I can see updates notifications even without it.

I don't see gconf2 in there ...

Byobu definitely should not bring in Gnome. What distro/version are
you seeing this in?

update-notifier-common is used to assist in showing the updates
available for Byobu.

Well, it's really a problem with the update-notifier-common package in
Lenny, pulling in graphical stuff. That should not be necessary for
the common package.

Byobu needs it for the updates available check:
 * update-notifier-common: /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check
