Byobu 5.7 and Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS

Such a wonderful terminal utility we have here! Thank you so much.

Allow me to report some awkward behavior of Byobu 5.7 under Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS running on HP Pavillion dv6000 Laptop:

-- it seems that the .tmux.conf file in my ~/.byobu folder doesn't get sourced at the end of the launching procedure.
 I wanted to use it to launch my own window set at startup. If I source my .tmux.conf file manually it works as expected.

-- All these links bouncing init scipts forth and back from the ~/.byobu to /usr/share/byobu folder make the scripts a nightmare to understand. And there is also this massive use of environmental variables that adds more complexity in the code readability.

-- Gnome became significantly slower at startup. I'll try to investigate this behavior and perhaps pose a separate question for this.

-- The sourcing of the window file with screen was more intuitive though. And I liked the visualization of the default windows in the Byobu menu.

-- The fan speed indicator disappeared. It used to work with the previous version the one in the official Ubuntu 10.04 PPAs.
Lurking the code I had the feeling that is a problem related to the location of the fan control file in the sys. Could you perhaps address me on how you used to monitor the fan speed in your previous release, so that I can patch my Byobu?

-- I was launching byobu directly after startup adding the command byobu in my .profile file. If I do so now gnome doesn't startup anymore!! I am a rookie Linux user, so you can imagine the nerve shakedown I had for a few minutes... :)
I figured you have to launch it with the byobu-launcher instead.

-- Otherwise I find tmux much much nicer than screen, and the job of making intuitive keybindings is so admirable! And this lovely feature of saving splits! The Shiftt+F1 makes the whole Byobu world at your finger tips!

Update:

I got curious about this issue and tried to get more information to be more specific in the description of the symptoms.

 1) I uninstalled byobu.
 2) wiped clean the ~/.byobu folder
 3) disabled the development PPA
 4) installed byobu 2.68 from the offical Ubuntu repo
    -- fan speed display works with toggle on/off
   -- windows file loading works
 5) enabled the byobu PPA, apt-get byobu (installed 5.7)
   -- fan speed WORKS but in the byobu menu looks disabled
  -- loading of custom default windows set DOESN't work
 6) modified the display of the fan speed in the byobu menu
  -- fan speed display disappears, no way to get it back
  -- loading of the default windows set is still obscure to me

new update:
  .. if I create a new user I get the proper fan speed display
  .. if I brute force a copy of the whole content of my .byobu from one user to the other I get the fan speed back also in my real profile
  .. now I could play around with the session file and diff stuff to see if the cause is there... but I'm doing this on my work breaks...
  .. so am I close to the root of a bug?
  .. is there something wrong with the fan speed button in the Byobu menu?
  .. I don't dare touching it now that I see it working! 8)

I would still appreciate the help for the .tmux.conf file, there I'm completely blind

I'm also fiddling around with the gnome slow startup. But this seem a well known random odd behavior of gnome rather then your nice tool.

ok new update:
I've been struggling to get the automatic window configuration to run,
tried to put my windows set in:
  -- ~/.byouburc
  -- ~/.byoburc.tmux
  -- ~/.byobu/.byobu.tmux

no luck.

I tried to launch byobu-tmux directly from the .profile file:
  -- gnome badly crashed again
  -- removed apt-get --purge remove byobu
  -- reinstalled (meanwhile you came out with 5.10)
  -- it doesn't work at all anymore
     -- .: 50: Can't open /etc/lib/byobu/include/common
  -- if I sudo -H byobu it does run

By the way, it would be nice to see the current installed version in the F9 menu.

I think I will give up. It's too fuzzy for me rookie skills.
