How does the mail notification work

I've enabled the mail notification in byobu. A "[M]" indicator has appeared, but that's all. It is always there regardless of new mail. I have fetchmail running and delivering mail via postfix into /var/mail/My_Username. I receive the bash/biff notification about new mail, but the byobu mail notification always jus shows [M].

Sadly, that notification is only half-implement, as a wishlist item
from someone (not me).

I would *gladly* accept good code that supports one or more mail clients...

Can a simple implementation not just output the number of files in /var/mail/_user_/new?
