Why are hidden Files ( .* ) excluded by default? (karmic)

Asked by tankdriver

I made a Snapshot of my home directory, default settings.
Then I recognized that my settings and __MAILS___ !!! (.evolution) wasn't backuped.

I think a (Gnome) Simple Backup Suite should backup (Evolutions) mails per default.

Hi,

I also think it would be better to remove the default exclusion of '.'

I rather suggest to add exclusions for .thumbnails and .cache

Andreas

Thanks for that fast answer.
I made some thoughts about "adding" hidden files and exclusions:
I don't know if the rsync command is executed with the "copy links" option, or "only one filesystem" or something.
This could be problematic at folders like .gvfs (with all temp mounted Networkfolders) and .wine (with its dosservices links pointing at / )

rsync is executed with "copy links as links" (default behavior) but not with "only one file system".

excluded by default? BackInTime is a popular backup utility for Linux, and Linux keeps important system files in hidden folders under the root folder. I just lost all my Linux preference and application data, as well as a number of files in hidden folders. Why are hidden folders excluded? Surely backing up your trash is a small price to play for having your system files intact?

Latest version don't exclude ".*" by default (but exclude ".cache", ....).
But once you installed the application default excludes don't change. You have to fine-tune it for your needs.

Dan
