Add an icon to the Task Bar (Ubuntu/Unity)

Asked by marcelops

Hello,

I have been using BackInTime to back up my files, and it's amazing... Congratulations guys!!

On the other hand, it's annoying to have an extra open window among my running software.

To avoid that, I wrote a shell script to (1) check if the backup volume is mounted and (2) to perform the backup using BackIntime, and it's working perfectly.

Now, I'd like to know if it's possible (or if you're planning) to add an icon to the Task Bar to show the status of the backups. Exactly the same behavior of the TimeMachine on Mac OS X.

It would be great to have such a feature.

Thanks,
Marcelo

BIT din't run all the time.
While it is taking a snapshot it shows a systray icon (if it runs as the same user as current xserver user logged-in). If you are logged in as another user as the one who take the snapshot ... xserver will refuse connection.

Does it show a systray icon?? On which window manager?? I have been using Unity (Ubuntu) and I have never seen such an icon!! Do you have a screenshot or something??

It would definitely "work for me", if it shows a systray icon "when it is taking the snapshot". Actually, this is exactly what I'm looking for.

Thanks,
Marcelo

I think unity blocks by default "systray icons".
You can try this: http://askubuntu.com/questions/67312/how-do-i-enable-the-pidgin-system-tray-icon
