Icons do not appear on dock

Hello,

In the tray the only icons i can see are from the applets. When i open a program, an icon does not appear as it did before. I'm stuck switching with alt+tab.

Im using Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex and installed AWN. At first it was fine, but then a few months ago (cant remember exactly how long ago the problem started.

What I have done is uninstalled an reinstalled through Synaptic Package Manager, but this doesn't seem to do anything.

When you say "tray", what are you referring to? The dock itself (which would be incorrect), or one of the notification area (also known as the system tray) applets?

Right-click either end of the dock and select "Dock Preferences". In the left pane, select "Applets". In the right pane, it should be divided into a top list and a bottom icon set. In the bottom, is there a Launcher/Taskmanager applet? (Hover over the icons to see their name.) If it does not exist, Select it in the top list and then press "Activate". If the applet is not activated, please list all of the applets in the bottom icon set, in order.

That's not my problem. I can very well see the applet icons. Currently I am using the calendar, show desktop and weather applet.

My problem is that when i open firefox, no icon appears in the dock.

The question is, is the applet named "Taskmanager/Launcher" activated on your dock?

Er, I meant to say "Launcher/Taskmanager". The applet's icon looks similar to the Dock Preferences' icon.
