How do you know that compiz is running?

Well, in the Add/Remove program it says its installed. Does that mean its running?

As soon as I ticked that it worked. I never used to have this problem. I
have two other computers with it on and it runs without that. Both using
Ubuntu 9.04, so not sure why this stopped for the lsptop I'm on running
in a VM.

For what it's worth, compositing in Metacity defaults to off (because AIUI some video card still don't work well with it), so maybe that's why.

Well, I'm not I'm happy with how its working, its very sticky and jerky. Its also affecting the rest of the programs.

I just realised something too looking at your reply. Since you mentioned Metacity, I cannot get metacity to open, so I think its working in conflict with whatever else I use. Sorry I'm still learning with Ubuntu. I have compiz working, with the compiz Icon in the Task bar, and in Select Windows Manager, I have Compiz selected, so I think there is something not right here, for it to be working.

In the bug you reference, there's another option for loading Metacity:

That command will close Compiz and replace it with a composited Metacity.

Hi, thank you for your message. I have Jaunty, so ran the command.
Looked in the SynPkgMgr found that Metacity is installed, looked in
Applications/Other where the launch button is, click on it, and nothing
happens. Should box appear to change preferences? If it wont appear, how
can I get Metacity to run.

It's not something that appears in the Applications menu, because the window manager automatically runs at startup, and most users don't need to run another one.

The preferences for Metacity (if I remember correctly) are located at System -> Preferences -> Windows.

Hi, well, that didnt work, I am having problems using Ubuntu now, takes ages to do anything. How do I turn metacity off? At least it wsa quite fast before I turned it on. Sorry about that.

I think you can just run "compiz --replace" in the same way as metacity. But I don't run Compiz, so it's probably better if you ask elsewhere.
