What are the "helpers"?

I have activate several "helpers" but I don't see any difference in AWN.
What are the "helpers"? What do they do?

Helpers add functionality to the application launcher. For example, if you have a rhythmbox launcher, then you can turn on the rhythmbox helper and now you can play/pause and next/previous song through the right click menu.
